ROCtober

Don’t stop envisioning your future! As a study abroad student, you understand the value of international education. While international travel is restricted, ROCtober encourages you to envision your future!

ROCtober is a month of synchronous and asynchronous virtual engagement to encourage our students to envision their global future focused through the lens of our four traditional conference themes, each week being a different theme.

Below you will find a list of events that we invite you to be a part of throughout the month of October. Read about each event to learn more details and to register.

ROCtober 2020:

Going Abroad Again | October 5th – 9th

  • Post-baccalaureate International Fellowships & Scholarships

    This session will discuss post-baccalaureate fellowships and scholarships for students seeking to go abroad after they graduate. Some of the programs covered will include US Student Fulbright, Schwarzman Scholarship, Boren Awards, Critical Language Scholarship, Congress Bundestag/DAAD, Princeton in Asia,, and the UK scholarships like Marshall, Gates Cambridge, and Mitchell among others.

  • Taking the Leap from Study Abroad to the Peace Corps
    Wednesday, October 7 at 2:30pm EST

    Students will learn about meaningful opportunities to go abroad after graduation with the Peace Corps. Through Peace Corps’ two-year program life-defining experiences, volunteers get the chance to fully integrate into a host country community, where they live and work on projects related to education, health, economic development, environment, agriculture and youth development. Volunteers sharpen their skills in the field and are challenged with new opportunities, and go to work every day excited by the opportunity to make change. This session will cover our available programs, benefits and commitment, the requirements, and how to apply.

Study Abroad in Your Career | October 12th – October 16th

  • Market Your Study Abroad Experience: Put Your Global Education Experience to Work

    Whether or not you planned it, studying abroad may have made you more marketable to future employers. The skills and knowledge you learned while abroad may be easily transferrable into the working world. During this workshop students will get the opportunity to reflect on their study abroad experience to better understand the skills they developed while abroad. Students will learn about how to apply the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to interviews and will get the opportunity to practice using this method. Students will also learn how to add study abroad to a resume and cover letter.

Becoming A Global Citizen | October 19th – 23rd

  • ROC Regional Photo Contest
    Enter to win a $100 gift card by replicating a scene from your study abroad experience or a place you wish to visit one day using items you can find around your home! To be eligible for the prize, participants must be a student or alumni from one of the participating universities* and follow the instructions below:
    1. Follow the ROC Your Global Future Instagram account
    2. Post your photo on Instagram and use the hashtag #GlobalROCtober2020
    3. Encourage your friends to ‘like’ your picture

Entries must be posted between October, 19 – October 31. Winner will be determined by the image that gets the most ‘likes’ by October 31, 2020

  • Global Reunion
    Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00pm EST

    Connect with students who participated in a study abroad program in the same country or region as you! Share a favorite picture, memory, food, piece of memorabilia or music from your time abroad. Leave with an action item for how to continue being a Global Citizen throughout your life.

    Did COVID prevent you from going abroad? Or did you have to come home early? If so, this is also an opportunity to hear what it’s really like for students that studied in your country of interest or connect with those that had their study abroad program cut short.

Reflecting on Your Experience Abroad | October 26th – 30th

  • Unpacking Your Experience: A Reflection of Your Time Abroad

    This workshop is a facilitated dialogue to prompt an intentional analysis and reflection of your study abroad experience. Forge a deeper understanding of the connections, complexities, opportunities and impact of your study abroad experience as they connect to our global community as well as your future goals. Unpack your time abroad (good and bad), disruptions due COVID-19, and the skills you have developed and enhanced. Gather photos and/or memorabilia from your time overseas to share as we wrap up global ROCtober’s month-long series of events and workshops!

o   Show and tell! Share a picture of your favorite study abroad souvenir.
